Taking its name from the Paris Exposition International des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes of 1925, the Art Deco style was the last word in design for a generation. Using characteristic geometric or stylised shapes art deco works and patterns, early Art Deco works were made of costly materials such as ivory, lacquer art deco works and jade, their ownership restricted to the wealthiest of buyers. With the advent of the Great Depression, designers turned to economical mass-produced materials such as bakelite art deco works and aluminium. Chiparus: Master of Art Deco by Alberto Shayo,
Born in Romania, Demetre Chiparus (1886-1947) studied in Italy art deco works and France before settling in Paris, where he perfected the chryselephantine technique of combining ivory with bronze. Produced as multiples, his works were greatly admired as small-scale decorative objects art deco works and today are among the most coveted objects from the Art Deco period, capturing the lively art deco works and sensuous spirit of the time. This lavishly illustrated volume examines Chiparus's work as an embodiment of the Art Deco style.
